iOS 16: Release date, features, supported iPhone, and more info

Apple's software wheel does not cease and after iOS 15 it is the turn of iOS 16. Apple's new operating system is, as every year, one of the most anticipated and, during WWDC 2022, the company has already revealed what news it will bring and has deployed the beta for developers.

This version, which will arrive at the same time as iPadOS 16 and the rest of the operating systems, including the Apple Watch, is full of novelties focused, mainly, on customization. Let's go over everything we know about iOS 16, including the iPhones that will be compatible.

Which iPhone will be compatible with iOS 16?

If there's one standout feature of iOS, whatever version it is, it's its broad compatibility. The company of the bitten apple usually takes into account old devices when thinking about new versions of software. And with iOS 16 it has not made the exception. These are the compatible models:

  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone SE (2nd gen.)
  • iPhone SE (3rd gen.)

As expected, the iPhone 6s, iPhone 7 and the first 'SE' are left out of the update, with the iPhone 8 being the cut-off line. It's also evidence that the new 2022 iPhones will come with iOS 16 as standard. These devices, which are provisionally called iPhone 14 in the absence of confirmation, would be presented in early September.

We do not know if by then iOS 16 will be officially launched, but surely it will be when they land on the market. In fact, Apple usually reserves the release of software versions like these until after the presentation of its iPhone so as not to reveal any features of these.

Returning to the case of the iPhone that will not update to iOS 16, to say that this does not mean that they will become obsolete mobiles. Far from it. They will remain fully functional devices and whose applications will continue to function normally.

There will come a time when it is not so, but it seems that it will still be several years and for this you just have to see the compatibility of apps like WhatsApp, which guarantee that even years after running out of iOS updates they are still functional.

What's new in iOS 16?

Taking into account that this system was already officially presented at Apple's WWDC 2022, we can already have a good string of novelties. It does not mean that they will be the only ones, since it is usual that there is some more feature before the launch and even after. However, the most outstanding and confirmed are these:

  • Redesigned lock screen: we can change both the color and the style of the time and date, with the option to choose between different wallpapers for each moment and with the possibility of having widgets that are updated live in sight. In addition, this new iOS screen suggests that possibly the iPhone 14 Pro incorporate the always-on screen function.
  • Changes in notifications: not so much in aesthetics, but in position. Now they are grouped at the bottom of the screen to make them more accessible and with the possibility of hiding them so that they do not cloud the view of the panel.
  • Improvements in privacy: the so-called "Safety Check" gives greater power to the user to decide which permissions each app accesses, now having everything more centralized.
  • Three new features in iMessage: in addition to being able to mark messages as unread, we can edit and delete them once sent, although for the latter it should be a short time since it was sent. Similarly, the indication of "edited" will also leave a trace in the case of those messages that we have rewritten.

  • Changes in Mail: iOS 16 brings the ability to cancel recent shipments, schedule emails for later or be able to add reminders for tracking. A good way that many users do not have to resort to alternatives such as Spark, since those functions until now absent were a good reason to use other mail managers.
  • Live Text extends to video: we can capture the text in motion and then treat it in a text editor as it happens with the Live Text in photos that premiered with iOS 15.

  • Crop the background in photos: using artificial intelligence, iOS 16 allows you to quickly select the main subject of a photograph and crop its background, being able to drag and share the subject's photo in PNG format to applications such as Messages, Twitter or Telegram.
  • Apple Maps enhancements: Routes with stops are added, including up to 15 detections and fully synchronized between all devices. It will also allow you to add transport cards that will be sent to the Wallet app.
  • What's new in Siri: Apple's virtual assistant can now pick up calls if asked, send messages without having to confirm them and even add emojis to messages if requested.
  • Possibility to unlock the iPhone horizontally: iPhones with Face ID can already be unlocked horizontally with the same efficiency as horizontally, something that until now was not possible. At the software level, the recognition angle has been improved, although phones that are not from the iPhone 12 and 13 generations are left out of this function, since they are the ones that have the greatest advances in their sensors.

When will i be able to download and install iOS 16?

Apple has not officially confirmed dates beyond placing the launch in "autumn". However, and based on how it has done other years, it is more than foreseeable that September will be the month in which this version will be officially released to the public. It will do so at the same time around the world and without distinctions of iPhone, as long as they are in the aforementioned list of compatible devices.

What Apple has already released is the beta of iOS 16 for developers, with the idea of launching the first public beta sometime in July. If you want toinstall the iOS 16 beta now and try all the new features, you will have to follow these simple steps:

  1. From your iPhone, enter the Beta Profiles website.
  2. Locate the "iOS 16 Beta Profile" section and click on Install Profile. If you see a notice on the web give "Install anyway" and in the iOS pop-up to "Allow".
  3. Now open the mobile settings and click on "Downloaded profile" at the top.
  4. Click now on "Install" in the upper right.
  5. Click on "Restart now" if you get a pop-up window suggesting it or do it yourself manually.
  6. Once your iPhone is turned on again, go to General > Settings > Software Update.
  7. Wait for iOS 16 beta 1 to appear and tap "Download to install".

As we said, the public beta will come out next month and, if you follow in the wake of iOS 15 and previous ones, throughout the summer new beta versions would be happening. In them, Apple usually introduces some feature that does not appear in the first beta, despite being announced. It also occasionally takes the opportunity to integrate other unannounced features.

Although if there is something to highlight about these beta versions is that they are usually plagued by errors such as unexpected restarts, higher battery consumption, apps that do not work well, etc. That is why they are reserved for developers and the most techie public, not being recommended for the general public. In fact, some analysts have commented that this version will have a greater number of errors than usual due to the internal changes that it will entail. This has been known based on their beta schedule.
